Barranquilla is a port city and the capital of the Atlántico department. Over a million people call it home. After World War 2 the city grew into Colombia’s main port, and gained the nickname of Colombia’s Golden Gate.
Visit the zoo or go down to the Magdalena river for some food and maybe a ride on a ferry. Visit the Museo Romantico or Parque Cultural del Caribe.
If you happen to be in the city towards the end of February then the annual Carnival of Barranquilla has to be seen. It has been compared to the Rio carnival in Brazil and is recognized for its cultural importance by UNESCO.
There’s also the gold museum and La Cueva, where perhaps Colombia’s best know author, Gabriel Garcia Marquez used to frequent.
